—Lancaster farming, Saturday, March 31,1979 100 Women playing By JERRY WEBB NEWARK, Del. - Women are playing an increasingly important role in American agriculture. The evidence is everywhere, particularly in the farm press. A rash of stories in farm magazines recently details the role of today’s women in today’s farming. Of course farm women were among the very first to be liberated. No one ever held open doors and picked up heavy objects for them down on the farm. From the very beginning of civilization, which is when agriculture began, women have worked right alongside their men doing whatever jobs they could do. In business and politics it’s often been said that behind every successful man is a successful woman. Well, the truism in agriculture is that beside every successful man is a successful woman. From the earliest days of American farming right up to the present, examples are everywhere. There are women who get no more involved in the farming operation than to ask a husband what kind of day he’s had and to prepare him a hot meal now and then. And there are those who keep the books, run errands, wait in line at the grain elevator, and in general make themselves useful in less physical ways. But times are changing and the woman’s role in agriculture today often involves a lot more than just being a good helper to a successful farmer. Today, many women actually run farms, make all of the decisions, and do much of the hard work. Certainly some of them have come into agriculture through the death of their mate. A working farm was simply left to them and they had no choice. But others are ALL MODELS IN STOCK INC. more important getting into farming because they want to farm. The agricultural colleges around the country abound with women whose goals in life are to operate their own farms.
