Cows closed 1.00-1.50 higher and bulls 1.00-2.00 higher. The upward spiral in fed cattle prices continued with most of the fresh upturn registered at midweek as carcass prices ’trended higher. Most packing plants observed a non-slaughter holiday on Monday and the Eastern seaboard was again paralyzed by heavy snow. In addition, one major local buyers was off the market as a result of labor difficulties. However, reduced marketings were able to fully offset the bearish ef fects of the situation and most buying interests were forced to compete aggressively for minimum slaughter quotas. Much of the steer and heifer supply was good to average-choice and mud was a prevalent condition. Slaughter steers made up approximately 36 pet. and heifers 37 pet. cows comprised 14 pet and feeders 11 pet. STEERS: At midweek high time, three loads choice and prime 3-4 1184-1394 lbs. 67.00.
