Kreider, Cochranville. was named top Pa. farmers to be interviewed HARRISBURG - United States farmers spent almost $lOO billion in 1977 to produce crops, livestock and poultry, topping the previous year’s $B9 billion level, according to the Pennsylvania Crop and Livestock Reporting Ser vice. This averages over $35,000 per farm, nationally. Feed, accounting for over $14.5 billion, was the major expenditure, followed by livestock and poultry pur chases at $10.2 billion; rent at $B.l billion; wages at $7.9 billion; and fertilizer, lime and soil conditioners at $6.9 billion. During February and March, enumerators from the Pennsylvania Crop and Livestock Reporting Service will interview a cross section of Pennsylvania farmers as part of a nationwide program to determine 1978 production costs. Along with questions concerning outlays for equipment, services and other production needs, some farmers will be asked about the kinds of places where they buy feed, fuel, fertilizer, pesticides, feeder animals and other major production inputs. Information about farm production outlays is im portant in comparing the farmer’s well-being with that of other groups in the nation’s economy.
