EDITOR | Collecting awards for having the county’s reserve champion steer was 12 year old Michelle Dean of Strasburg. Michelle received a 4-H Club jacket from Farm Credit Association. State Farm Show, Grand Champion Steer owner, Steve Long, of Peachbottom, was awarded and electric clock from Hess Mills, Paradise. Max Smith, Lancaster County agricultural agent, who was presenting the awards, also recognized Steve’s brother Sam. Sam RALSTON COMPANY SAND LIVESTOCK SYSTEMS, INC. NEW BOLTON CENTER showed Moose the 1210 pound Angus-Chianma steer at the Farm Show. Mr. and Mrs. Samuel F. Long are the parents of these two young men. Owners of the three animals were Bonme Frey of Refton, Steve Long and Ed Nissley of Manheim. Pennfield Corporation awarded the three youth 4-H pen sets. Cope and Weaver Company, New Providence awarded Christine a 4-H pen set. Having the steer with the second highest daily gain was Kent Henry of Strasburg. His Carl Herr bred steer gained 3.10 pounds per day. Kent was also presented a pen set by Cope and Weaver Company. Second year 4-H member Brian Hess of Conestoga was named the top County beef showman at the Pa. Farm Show. Grubb Supply Com pany of Elizabethtown AND Lancaster Farming, Saturday, February 3,1979 presented Brian with a trophy. Taking home several awards that evening was Sarah Brubaker, Lancaster. The seven year 4-H member won a silver bowl trophy for being County champion beef showman. The award was presented by Grubb Supply Company, Elizabethtown. Sarah was also the winner of the coveted Intelligencer Journal steer. Sarah the daughter of Clyde and Dorothy Brubaker forfieted the prize steer because she and her family will be moving out of the County. Sarah also won a silver bread tray for showing the reserve County champion lamb, and the junior champion Hampshire ewe at the Farm Show. Wenger’s Mill, Romme presented the award. Also that evening, members of the junior and senior livestock judging teams presented Max Smith and Gary Dean of Strasburg gift certificates for their coaching throughout the year. Smith and 13 other club leaders of the 80 member beef and sheep club were also thanked. The Club presented them gift cer tificates to Willow Valley Restaurant. Willow Valley had bought the County champion steer at the Clubs sale from Darlene Huyard last November.
