such competitive events as a bale
throwing contest, penny scrambles,
log sawing, chip throwing, hog
calling, potato picking, and possibly
tobacco spitting. Once all that’s over,
the floor will be open for square
dancing. There is no charge to enter.
Just come prepared to have fun, and
dress properly for the occasion
There is some talk of fining those
folks who dare to show up anything
other than genuine farm clothes The
entire affair is just a part of a new 3-
day farm show which is designed to
supplement the original Farm Show,
which has taken place annually for
the past 63 years
The new show, which is to get
underway March 8, 9 and 10, will be
an exhibition of machinery, with
added highlights such as Farmers’
Fun Night, a highly competitive horse
pulling contest, and an equipment
auction According to former Penn
sylvania Secretary of Agriculture
Kent Shelhamer, who initiated the
idea, the new show will allow visiting
farmers to see a vast part of Penn
sylvania’s agribusiness which can’t

be included in the January Farm
Show because of space problems
The new farm exhibition, like the
original Farm Show, will be held at
the Farm Show Complex The new
event differs from the old in several
respects The most obvious of those
differences is undoubtedly the fact
that there won’t be any animals at
the March show Also, unlike the
Farm Show, the upcoming event will
include a Friday night and Saturday
on the schedule.
It is hoped by some that if the
March show is a big success, it can be
used to alleviate some of the growing
pains of the January Farm Show
There is a possibility that the March
exhibition may eventually overtake
many of the commercial aspects of
the January show If that’s the case,
then that may allow the original Farm
Show to expand with its emphasis on
animal agriculture

community holds the power of

Poultry health meeting, vo-
making the March show either a
success or a failure. If potential
exhibitors refuse to go along with the
idea, then the show can’t be held. If
farmers and their friends don’t feel
like going to the show in March, then
the concept might very well be
abandoned
But for 1979, at least, the March
exhibition is for real. Despite the fact
that a number of major manufac
turers won’t take part in the show
this year, most of the exhibit space
has been sold There is reason to
believe that the exhibition will be a
success, unless bad weather in
terferes or farm families show little
interest
The organizers of
Night would like to have some idea

expected So, if you might want to
enter one or more of the contests,
