—Lancaster Fanning, Saturday, January 0,1979 20 Tobacco show boasts By DIETER KRIEG LANCASTER - The Lancaster County Tobacco Show, held here at the Farm and Home Center on Wed nesday afternoon, was one of the best in quantity arid quality on record. The number of entries, 171, was the most since 1973, and the quality, according to Lan caster County Agricultural Agent Arnold Lueck, was as good as any he has seen. Showing grand champion hands of tobacco this year were Gary Neff of Miller svxlle R 1 and Raymond S. Brubaker of Lancaster. Neff’s winning entry was a selection of long wrappers, while Brubaker came out on top in the long , filler category. The first-place long binder entry was exhibited b Jere Myer of Lancaster displayed this winning tobacco entry in the 4-H division of the Lancaster County Tobacco Show. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Myer. Following the presentation of the gifts by the queens, visitors to the Governor’s Preview will be treated to entertainment featuring the Zembo Temple Drill Team, a State Police Horse Training Act, the Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps and the United States Army Drill Team. Sbelhamer called these groups definite crowd pleaaers. He said that the Old Guard Fife and Drum Crops provides a real taste of colonial pageantry. The Old Guard, decked out in colonial uniform with real muskets, puts on a drill that must be seen to be ap preciated. As the program in the Large Arena ends Sunday afternoon, the Governor’s Tour of the Main Exhibition area beings. On display throughout the 13-acre building will be the best and Hershey of Lancaster. Raymond S.' Brubaker of Lancaster was first with his hands of short wrappers and short fillers. Capturing first place in short binders was Eugene M. Rohrer of Strasburg. In 4-H competition, Jerry Myer of Lancaster won grand champion honors. The Penn Manor High School student exhibited a hand of wrappers for the title. In addition, he had the top entry in the filler class. In competition among vocational agriculture students, Jere Neff of Millersville was named grand champion as a result of the quality displayed in his filler leaves. Tops in wrapper entries was that of Donald Dohner of Elizabethtown Rl. the most modem farm equipment and technology. In addition, the finest of the state’s dairy cattle, horses, sheep, hogs and poultry will be in. the barns in preparation for judging later in the week. Shelhamer said that the main exhibition areas of the complex will be closed until 3:00 p.m., but following the entertainment in the arena, all areas will remain open to the public until the doors dose at 5:30 p.m. Don’t let winter put a freeze on your milk production. Clay Whit more of American Cigar Co. Both noted that the quality of this year’s tobacco leaves was better than that of a year ago. Mann commented, however, that some evidence of shed bum was evident in some-of the entries. “The color is good, it runs more uniform than it ever did,” he said.
