In the background is a plaque with the name of donors to the Farm and Home Center in Lancaster. It was through Mrs. McGarvey’s records that this plaque was made possible. Ethel McGarvey honored LANCASTER - Mrs. Ethel McGarvey of East Peter sburg was honored December 19 for her 13 years of service as secretary to the Farm and Home Foun dation. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) placed a similar ban on horse un ports from the United Kingdom, Ireland, France and Australia in September 1977, when this newly discovered equine disease was found in those countries. However, it was later found that the disease was in troduced in Kentucky Thoroughbred breeding stock by two stallions from France that had been im ported just prior to the ban. Soviets bullish on our cattle WASHINGTON, D.C. - The United States completed a record sale of breeding cattle to the Russians in mid- October when it shipped 450 Santa Gertrudis beef cattle to Moscow. An earlier shipment contained 95 dairy breeding bulls—Bs Holstein and 10 Brown Swiss, bringing the total to 545 head. According to USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Ser vice, the largest previous sale of breeding cattle to the Soviets was 218 in 1976.
