Lancaster Co. 4-H’er wins scholarship
LANCASTER, Pa. - A
freshman at Pennsylvania
State -University has been
named winner of a $4OO 4-H
Agricultural Careers
scholarship.
Philip Risser, Leola Rl,
was among 15 young people
who received scholarships
from DeKalb Agßesearch,
Inc. Young people from 20
states are eligible for the
scholarships.
The awards were an
nounced during the 57th
National 4-H Congress
in Chicago'Nov. 26 to 30.
Winners were selected by
the Cooperative Extension
Service.
Risser, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Allen K. Risser, plans
a career in agricultural
engineering. He is a nine
year 4-ITer.

home greenhouses, there are
two basic types: the lean-to
or attached, and the free

available, cost, and personal
preference.

Another challenging 4-H
project was trying to in

worked to accomplish this by

project was especially
important because it in
troduced me to real farming
at an early age.”
Since the age of seven,
Risser has been responsible
for raising some or all of the
family’s dairy heifers. “This
taught me to be responsible,

“In addition to teaching
me responsibility, I have
gained the practical
knowledge of how to raise
calves - which methods
work and which ones do
not,” Risser added.
The youth also helped plan
and then build a new heifer
facility, which he said gave
him the opportunity to
research modern methods of
raising heifers.
