procurement for the oc
cupied area of Western
Germany.
In 1950, with William B.
Hardy, they formed the
Beachley-Hardy Seed
Company, and he has served
as president the past 28
years.
Active in community
affairs, the award winner is
a member of the West Shore
Rotary Club and Robert
Bums Lodge. Beachley also
is an elder of the Paxton
Presbyterian Church of
Harrisburg.
Club 200 winners named
SMOKETOWN - Such
items as the acidity of sod,
pesticides, sod tests, and
fertilizer programs as they
relate to crop yields were all
covered at the recent
gathering for farmers
sponsored by the Chemgro
Fertilizer Company at the
Good ’n Plenty Restaurant,
here.
Jim Bowersox,
representing the Chemgro
Company, and Jack
Vitamin, from Ciba-Geigy,
each showed slides m their
presentations explaining
their various products and
services. They told of dif
ferent materials and
methods used in getting the
maximum yield from crops
in today’s farming
programs, touching on the
latest services and new
products offered.
The 250 farmers present
heard about the advantages
of adding fertilizer in the

was stressed that Fall is
usually an economical time
to purchase fertilizer.
The highlight of the
evening’s program occurred
when Tom Geeseman, an
employee of Chemgro,
bounded to the front of the
room, portraying a “Welsh
Mountain goat dairy and
guinea farmer”. Barefooted
and overalled, with a cigar
in his mouth; he played the
part of a farmer first ap
proached about using fer
tilizer and crop im
provement programs. Jim
Bowersox, acting the part of
the salesman told him of all
the advantages while the
“dirt farmer” gave his own
opinion of modern farming
methods
During the meeting, the
winners of the 1978 Club 200
Lancaster Farming, Saturday, December 2,1978—135
Contest, sponsored by
Chemgro, were introduced.
In 1978, the Club 200
member with the highest
yield winner was Earl
Huber, Conestoga. His yield
of 214.6 bushels of com per
acre won him and his wife a
trip to Bermuda.
The top ten placings in the
contest each are to be
treated to dinners for two by
Chemgro.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The
number of sheep and lambs
on feed in seven selected
States on November 1, 1978
totaled 1.19 million head,
down 1 per cent from the 1.20
million head on feed a year
ago. There were 1.06 million
head placed on feed during
September October this
year, which compares with
