Most, if not all, Pennsylvania counties are currently studying ways to keep farmland in production. Apparently this country has come to realize that 31 million acres of prime farmland have been lost in the United States in the past 10 years and that alarming rate can’t continue if we expect to keep the nation's most productive economic arm healthy. In looking to the future, we must consider too the impact of foreign sales and the trade balances. No one in this country needs to be told of the astronomical oil bill the United States pays No farmer needs to be reminded, either, of the nearly $24 billion worth of agricultural exports. Both imports of energy and exports of farm products will continue to play major roles in the overall economy of the United States.
