The evening before, Jeffrey Shenk received $2.60 a pound for his champion capon at the Lititz-Manheim-Elm-Penryn 4-H Capon Special show, and Wayne Huber won grand champion with Ruth Ann Miller capturing reserve champion with their capons at the Lancaster 4-H Capon Round-up. The Lincoln 4-H Capon Club Round-up was held on November 15 at the Ephrata Rotary Club in Ephrata. David Eaby, a Rotary member from Ephrata, was the top bidder on Scott Augsburger’s grand champion capon. Eaby paid a total of $92.25 for the 10V« pound bird. Scott is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Augsburger, Reinholds Rl. The second place, reserve champion pair went to Tim Pfautz of Stevens Rl. Tun, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Pfautz, sold his 12 pound capon for $4 a pound. Other participants in the round-up were Anita Augsburger, Remholds Rl, Eric DeFrees of Remholds Rl, Andy and Marcie Gehrnan of Stevens Rl, and Michael Pfautz, Stevens Rl. The club leader is Elmer Boyd of Ephrata R 5. The Lancaster 4-H Capon Round-up was held on November 14 at the Kiwarus Club of Lancaster. Wayne Huber, showed the winning pair of capons. Wayne showed the reserve champion capon last year at the Kiwams sponsored round-up. Wayne said it was “experience” of the owner that made the winning capon. Wayne has had the project for four years. He learned on his own, and his father gave advise from his experience of working on a chick farm. “You have to watch how you butcher and check for blisters and diseases” Wayne said. Ruth Ann Miller, a first year member of the Lititz- Manheim 4-H club, won reserve champion with her capon pair. Ruth Ann said her secret to successful capon raising was to “give them all the shelled com they want”. She raised over 200 capons on her own, with her father and brother helping our with the heavy work. Ruth is the 11 year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles N. Miller.
