By LAUREL SCHAEFF Staff Correspondent LEESPORT - “Sherlock”, a Cbarolais crossbred steer “proved his stuff’ on Oc tober 18 as his owner, 16- year old Darlene Dietrich led him to grand champion honors during the Berks County 4-H Baby Beef Show and Sale, held at Leesport Market and Auction, here. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Dietrich, Hamburg Rl, Darlene had shown her medium heavyweight steer earlier this year at the Reading and Oley Fairs where he cap tured both reserve champion honors but couldn’t make that final step to the top until this show. Darlene also proved her skills in fitting and showmanship as she was named grand champion fitter and reserve champion showman. Dennis was proud that he finally had a champion in his Chianina Hereford Angus cross, purchased at the Chianina Sale, Wrightsville. “I’ve won showing and fitting cham pionships before' but never had a reserve or grand champion animal,” he said with a smile. Dennis has been involved in 4-H for many years and says he will surely miss it, especially showing. He has served in many positions while in 4-H, including president of County Council. Presently he is working for A.F. Moyer Packing, Bem ville and spends much of his time helping on the family farm. Darlene is presently attending the 11th grade at Hamburg Area High School and is vice president of die FFA chapter there. She is looking forward to attending college to study agribusiness. Following the show, judged by Gary Dean, of Lancaster County, all but five county steers were sold, which will go on to the Farm Show. Ralph Zettlemoyer, auctioneer, bought the grand champion for $l.lO per pound while the reserve champion was purchased by Reading Bone Fertilizer Company, Reading, for 68 cents per pound. The average price paid for the 42 steers sold was 59 cents per pound without the reserve or grand champion. This included 34 show steers and eight companion steers.
