This year’s feat was ac complished on Oct. 4 during the World Dairy Expo at Madison, Wis. Teams from the Old Line State have now won the national 4-H dairy cattle judging, contest in seven of the ten even-numbered years counting back to 1960. Last year, m an odd numbered year, the Maryland delegation finished eleventh. This year’s Maryland team competed in a record large field of 38 state teams. In addition to winning the over-all championship, it scored first in total reasons and first in Brown Swiss breed judging The team also placed fourth in Holstein and >-Oetober2: seventh in Guernsey judging and twelfth in Jerseys. Pennsylvania was runner up state in the over-all team competition; Michigan, third; Kentucky, fourth, and Ohio, fifth. Kentucky had beat out a different Maryland team in 4-H dairy cattle judging on Sept. 25 during the Pennsylvania All- American Dairy Show at Harrisburg, Pa. The Maryland sweep in Brown Swiss judging at the national contest was aided by two team members finishing first and second among all individuals participating. Patty Kahler, 16, of Keymar (Frederick County) was the top individual in Brown Swiss judging, and Kevin Stiles, 17, of Boon sboro (Washington County) was runner-up. In over-all individual standings at the national contest, Dennis Patrick, 18, of Daisy (Howard County) placed third; Kevin Stiles finished fourth, and Patty Kahler, ninth. The fourth team member was Mrs. Cindy Stonesifer, 18, of Bloom (Carroll County). She was twenty-third in the national standings. Team coaches were Tony R. Rickard, Extension dairy science specialist at the University of Maryland in College Park, and Janet L. Shank of Elkton, Extension agricultural and 4-H agent in Cecil County. Miss Shank won state and national honors in both dairy cattle and livestock judging during her 4-H career in Washington County. She was also a member of the University of Maryland _ 11 - - J . Ironically, their record of winning in even-numbered years is a fairly recent phenomenon.
