Steers , hogs sold
at Solanco Fair
QUARRYVILLE
Truman Ferguson pur
chased the Grand Champion
FFA steer raised at the
Solanco Fair market sale,
this year by Troy Groff.
Groff, the son of Mr. and
Mrs. James Groff,
Quarryville R 2, showed a
Simmental-Angus weighing
1220 pounds. The steer
purchased from Sam Wiley,
Nottingham, was the reserve
champion of the show and
the first place heavyweight
FFA steer.
Ferguson paid a total of
$1,830 at the price of $1.50 a
pound.
Twenty-three head of beef
went before the auction
block bringing in final bids
ranging from 82 cents a
pound paid by James
Kreider for 'the reserve
champion FFA steer of the
show, owned by Dwight
Herr, to 68 cents. The
animals weighed from 875
pounds to 1240 pounds with
the average price at 77 cents
per pound. Mussers Store
bought seven of the animals
before the sale ended.

Charles N. Simeone, trading
as the Fruit Basket m Bethel
Park, Pa., was recently
ordered to pay a reparation
award by the U.S. Depart
ment of Agriculture for
violations of the Perishable
Agricultural Commodities
Act(PACA).
Officials of the USDA’s
Agricultural Marketing
Service charged Simeone
with falling to pay the
award, in the amount of $909
set by USDA in favor of a
Pennsylvania commission
merchant for 14 lots of
potatoes shipped from June
through September 1977.

Steve Long’s 915 pound third
place light weight at 71 cents
a pound and then donated the
$649.65 to the fair
association. The steer was
then bought by New Holland
Sales for 69 cents a pound for
a total of $631.35.
For the first time in the
fair’s history, the reserve
champion pen of hogs
brought the highest
"bid. Vickie Warfel’s reserve
champions were bid in by
The Friendly First Bank of
Strasburg for $1.25 per
pound, twenty cents more
per pound than the champion
Chester Whites owned by
Dannette Groff. Hatfield
Packing Co. started out the
sale by buying the cham
pions weighing a total of 425
pounds for the bid of $1.05.
Dannette Groffs grand
champion hogs were her
first entries at the Solanco
fair. They were her second
year 4-H project. She is the
daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Donald L. Groff, Peach
Bottom Rl. Vickie is the
daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Georgfe Warfel, Buck Road,
Quarryville.
A total of 21 pens of market
hogs were sold with prices
ranging from $.56 to $1.25.
Hatfield Packing pur
chased half of the 52 hogs
sold during the sale.
. Average price per pound
paid for the market hogs was
62 cents.

was also named reserve
champion fitter.

tlestown, exhibited the
reserve grand champion 4-H
steer. She placed first in the
jr. fitting class and second in
the jr. showmanship class.
Jeff Golden; York Springs,
showed the reserve cham
pion heavyweight 4-H Steer,
and was named grand
champion fitter and grand
champion showman.
Jim Reichart, Littlestown,
exhibited the champion
lightweight 4-H steer and
placed third in the in
termediate fitting class and
fourth in the intermediate
showmanship class.
Amy Breighner, Lit
tlestown, placed second in
the mediumweight class.
She also was named reserve
grand champion showman
and placed second in the
intermediate fitting class.
Pam Reichart, Lit
tlestown, showed the reserve
champion middleweight 4-H
steer. She placed fourth in
the sr. fitting and
showmanship contests.
John Reichart, Lit
tlestown, exhibited the
reserve champion light
weight 4-H steer, and placed
second in the junior fitting
class and first in the junior
showmanship class.
Tim Spangler, Gettysburg,
placed first in the light
weight class, and was fourth

Erik Quanbeck, Fairfield,
showed the champion and
reserve champion Santa
Gertrudis heifer. He placed
fifth in the intermediate
fitting and intermediate
showmanship classes.
Seed law
violated
NEW YORK, N.Y. - A
federal court has ordered
Northrup, King and Co., of
Minneapolis, Minn., to pay a
$1,950 penalty for seven
violations of the Federal
Seed Act. The Act, ad
ministered by the U.S.
Department of Agriculture,
is a truth-in-labeling law
intended to protect farmers
and consumers who buy
seed.
The U.S. District Court for
the District of Minnesota
ordered the penalty; two
additional charges were
dismissed.
Violations, while not the
same for all shipments, were
false labeling as to noxious
weed seeds, purity, ger
mination and maturity, and
failure to show required
labeling.
