them to be guide dogs for the
blind. At the present time, in
the different dubs located
throughout New Jersey and
Bucks County, Pa., there are
approximately 230 dogs kept
in family homes to be raised
for this program. More
homes are needed as the
goal in New Jersey is to
place 300 dogs throughout
the state.
In the Lively Leaders 4-H,
there are eight different
families involved, with a
total of 12 4-H members in
the club.
According to leader Mrs.
Lorraine Hudson, Wenonab,
N. J., getting a puppy is a
family 4-H project. Ac
cording to her, the mother m
the home plays an important
part in the training of the
puppy, for it is she that
spends a great deal of time
with the animal while the
children are in school and
the father is at work.
And part of the dog’s
training includes in
troducing them to as wide a
variety of experiences as
possible. And this includes
the adventure of riding a
train.
So, every year the Lively
Leaders make their annual
trek to the “Strasburg
Railroad, combining in
troducing their puppies to
the sights and sounds of
riding a train along with the
fun and fellowship of a club
picnic. Their tram ride is
made possible through the
permission that is granted to

Willow, a Golden Retriever

for Patti, Willow will leave
for training at the Seeing

Patti became involved
with the 4-h dog program
when a dog that her family
had died, and her parents
started to look for a
replacement puppy. Patti
wanted a dog that would be a
friend and a pet, and she
learned of the Seeing Eye 4-
H program. As a result she
received Willow. And even
though she admits that she
will hate to lose him, she is
eagerly looking forward to
getting her next puppy.
Patti is no stranger in 4-H
for besides her interest m
dogs, she keeps busy by
being in the 4-H craft club.
She is also planning'to join
the 4-H goat club in her area.
But the 4-H puppy club is the
only one where she will raise
a pet to give away.
Other activities that all the
members of the Lively
Leaders 4-h are involved in
include the Flemmgton Fair,
where a competition is held
for the dogs. The group also
will speak to civic groups.
