At the present time, in the different dubs located throughout New Jersey and Bucks County, Pa., there are approximately 230 dogs kept in family homes to be raised for this program. More homes are needed as the goal in New Jersey is to place 300 dogs throughout the state. In the Lively Leaders 4-H, there are eight different families involved, with a total of 12 4-H members in the club. According to leader Mrs. Lorraine Hudson, Wenonab, N. J., getting a puppy is a family 4-H project. Ac cording to her, the mother m the home plays an important part in the training of the puppy, for it is she that spends a great deal of time with the animal while the children are in school and the father is at work. And part of the dog’s training includes in troducing them to as wide a variety of experiences as possible. And this includes the adventure of riding a train. So, every year the Lively Leaders make their annual trek to the “Strasburg Railroad, combining in troducing their puppies to the sights and sounds of riding a train along with the fun and fellowship of a club picnic. One of the 4-IFers who was present for the trip was Patti Kaminski, Sicklefville Rl, N.J. ; a nine-year-old young lady who will shortly give up the first puppy she has raised as a 4-H project. throughout the train nde, Willow, a Golden Retriever now 15 months old, lay at her feet. As soon as a replacement puppy is found for Patti, Willow will leave for training at the Seeing Eye, Inc, Morristown. N.J. Patti became involved with the 4-h dog program when a dog that her family had died, and her parents started to look for a replacement puppy. Patti wanted a dog that would be a friend and a pet, and she learned of the Seeing Eye 4- H program. As a result she received Willow. And even though she admits that she will hate to lose him, she is eagerly looking forward to getting her next puppy. Patti is no stranger in 4-H for besides her interest m dogs, she keeps busy by being in the 4-H craft club. She is also planning'to join the 4-H goat club in her area. But the 4-H puppy club is the only one where she will raise a pet to give away. Other activities that all the members of the Lively Leaders 4-h are involved in include the Flemmgton Fair, where a competition is held for the dogs. The group also will speak to civic groups. with one such opportunity planned for September 25, when members, leaders, end the dogs will travel to the Pitman Womens Club in New Jersey. And during the upcoming 4-H week, the club will show a film depicting the 4-H aspects of their projects.
