New animal import center begun
NEW YORK - The
nation’s largest animal
import center at Stewart
Airport near Newburgh,
N.Y., will cost $5.2 million,
the U.S. Department of
Agriculture announced.
Construction is scheduled to
begin this momh and be
completed by January 1980.
The new center, to be
administered by USDA’s
Animal and Plant Health
Inspection Service (APHIS),
will replace a similar facility
operating since 1903 at
Clifton, N.J. APHIS Ad
ministrator Francis J.
Mulhem explained that the
increasing volume of U.S.
animal and poultry imports
has created a critical need
for more space.

supporting, with all costs
borne by commercial im
porters. Its modem facilities
will be used for isolating,
examining and testing
imported animals to assure
that they meet Department
animal health standards
before being moved to
farms, zoo or other
destinations.
“The center is a vital link

said. “These diseases
presently occur throughout
much of the rest of the
world.”

of the imported animals.
