Livestock market and auction news Omaha Cattle August, 17,1978 CATTLE - Compared with previous week’s close - Through Midweek prices on slaughter steers and heifers were 2.50-3.00 lower. Cows closed weak on 1.00 lower. Bulls weak, instances 50-1.00 lower. Four day receipts 13,900, last week 16,400, a year ago 15,700. Fed cattle price were again forced downward in reflection of an extremely bearish trade on carcass beef at the wholesale level. The fresh downturns en forced during the current week left current live prices generally at the lowest level since last April. Buyers were f of necessity cautions and selective as they sought to keep live prices in line with the rapidly deteriorating carcass trade; most were interested only in sufficient numbers to meet immediate requirements as the ratio between current live prices and carcass realisations was still unfavorable to slaughterers. The overall finish was rather attractive with a fair percentage of Choice steers and heifers and a modest volume Choice and Prime. Slaughter steers made up approximately 45 per cent and heifers 37 per cent. Cows comprised 11 per cent and feeders short 5 per cent.
