Flemington County 4-H’ers ready for their annual Achievement Fair FLEMINGTON, N.J. - It’ll be cows ‘n’ kids and much more at Hunterdon’s 4- H Achievement Fair, set for Wednesday through Saturday, August 9-12, at the Flemington Fairgrounds. There are loads of activities scheduled _to interest everyone. There’ll be a horse show held on Wednesday, along with twirling competition, a vegetable and flower show, annual'dairy goat show, seeing eye dogs. The Wed nesday schedule is capped off by a chicken barbeque at 5 to 7 p.m., and square dancing for all at 8. The activities set for Thursday include a com petition for youngsters 9 to 13 years of age, in what the 4-H leaders have labelled “groom and clean”. Par ticipants will be divided into teams of four. Each team will have two hours to groom and clean one pony. At the end of this tune, ponies will be judged in a grooming and showmanship class, com peting for awards. The 4-H prep clubs have a number of events scheduled. Also on Thursday, the County 4-H Sheep Show and Rabbit and Poultry Shows will be held. The Fairgrounds will be invaded by Holstein cows and calves on Friday as the Central Jersey Holstein Association conducts its annual show. This is a big event for the Holstein breeders and 4-H youth involved in dairy projects. It’s anticipated that some 120 or more head will be exhibited. It’s been in teresting to note over the years that youth generally out-numbers the seniors. And, often 4-H youngsters place at the top of the classes with their entries. The Holstein show begins at 10 a.m. and concludes about 4. Emphasis is on youth as many trophies and awards, including a registered Holstein calf, will be presented during the day. Also scheduled for 10 a.m. on Friday will be the Tractor Rodeo. This is an activity of the 4-H Tractor Club. At 7:30 p.m., the 4-H Queen and Escort Contest will be held at the Extension Center. Judging is based on conformation and fitting and showmanship. All activities at the Fairgrounds will be held under a 40 x 240 foot tent. So, it’s “rain or shine”. But, nothing like the hours put in by the youth fitting and Holsteins BRATTLEBORO, Vt. - Joe Schwartzbeck of Peace & Plenty Farm, Union Bridge, reports that his Registered Holsteins were classified for body con formation -in July. The scoring was done by an of ficial classifier of Holstein- Friesian Association of America, Brattleboro, Vermont. Dairymen enrolled in this herd improvement program receive a numerical score for each animal evaluated. The True-Type Holstein represents theoretical perfection and has a value of interested in, there’ll be preparing their animals for competition. It is well to note that in addition to the youth, families, and leaders, several organizations lend real support to the 4-H Achievement Fair. Big contributors are the Flemington Fair, Hunterdon Pomona Grange, the Flemington National Bank, Hunterdon County Board of Agriculture, and the Central Jersey Holstein Association. classified 100 points on the classification score card. Including animals previously scored, the Schwartzbeck’s herd has three Excellents, 22 Very Goods and 38 Good Pluses. The information from the classification of the herd will be summarized by the Holstein Association on its high speed computer. Returned to the breeder, these reports provide useful information for selection in the herd.
