Pa Located at Blue Ball Machine Works , The tears don’t roll down her cheeks quite as quickly, but the emotional wound is still causing unmeasurable heartache. Our 9-year-old Patty and Lassie, her registered Holstein 4-H calf, did a lot of growing up together last year. Both were novices in the show ring and learned about first year 4-H dairy project work as a team. Tall and mostly black, with white boots, tail switch and star on the forehead, Lassie patiently endured pre-show baths, buzzing clippers, hoof trimmings, halter breaking and leading practice sessions with a gentleness possessed by few young animals. AH of us were horrified when a halter, moist from a cow-washing session, swelled across Lassie’s nose and left a permanent fine white hairline across the shiny black. But with that prominent mark, Patty could immediately spot her calf in a row of black-faced heifers at the feed rack. . * Then, sometime in early July, Lassie disappeared. Neighbors have been called, visited, and have checked their he; newcomers Lost and found reports have brought no response. Adjoining pastures and fields have been searched. Again. And again. And again. Reluctantly, we faced the obvious fact we’d tried to avoid Lassie, and five other valuable unbred herdmates, had been stolen. Strange truck tire prints found in the ground at the heifer bam left us with no alternate con clusion. Our only hope now is that we can trace Patty’s beloved Meeting today Md. - The Maryland Christmas Tree Association will hold a summer meeting on July 29 at the home of William Underwood, Elkton, Md Starting at 9:30 a.m., the meeting will include an equipment demonstration, a tour of the farm, a business meeting, a shearing demonstration of a Douglas fir and a wreath making demonstration. pet through some observant cattle buyer or owner. Is she somewhere in a group of heifers, perhaps headed for a dairy replacement sale, to an embryo transplant center, or in waiting to be exported by plane or ship to some dairyman halfway across the world? And an unthinkable, but not to be overlooked, possibility weighs down on all our thoughts: has loveable Lassie been brutally butchered for some illicit meat sale 9 Sadly, theft and vandalism is not a new experience to us We have spent literally hundreds of dollars replacing slashed machinery belts and tires, and repairing rock-broken windows in equipment.
