Yields per acre seem to be up generally and' the straw taken from the field is of good quality and large quamty. D£ Warren Shenk, Mount Joy R 3, originally wasn’t planning to let his rye stand, but it looked better than some of his barley so he did. It was planted in potato ground and he thought the reason it did so well was because it was planted early m August of last year. He used a fine rye variety and got 45.8 bushels pen- acre, calling his crop very good. Off of his 3% acres, he also took off almost eight tons straw. He said that now there is some grass coming up in it, making it more difficult to harvest, but noted that the straw yields have been very good, better than wheat and barley. From the Mechanicsburg and Carlisle area came reports of fairly good har vests, some as high as almost 50 bushels per acre. One man called the crop very tall and decent although he added that there is grass in some fields, and some of the rye was down due to storm damage. Most of the rye that is harvested will be sold to be used as seed, either for use as a straight cover crop or both a cover crop over the Winter to be used for silage in the Spring. the 37
