Our farm calendar, on page 10, offers a quick review of all of the activities we have been informed about. John Yocum, superin tendent of Penn State’s research facility near Landisville, Lancaster County, extends an in vitation to all farmers and agribusinessmen in the area who are interested in learning more about crops and their management. The event at the Southeastern Field Research Laboratory, as it is officially known, is billed as the major field day of the year. According to Yocum, the program is designed to be of interest to farmers, seedsmen, retailers of farm products, and other persons interested m agriculture. Specialists from Penn State University will be on hand to answer questions. Lunch will be available. For more details and directions on how to get to that agronomic event, please turn to page 110 of this issue. Lancaster County’s Holstein Field Day, which is detailed on page 115, will be held at the Jay Landis farm, south of Millersville. Ac tivities begin at 10 a.m. In neighboring Chester County, Holstein breeders will hold then* annual get together at 7 p.m. at the Donald Hostetter farm, east of Oxford along Route 1. Page 32 of last week’s edition holds more details The cattlemen’s field day will take place at the Buck and Doe Ranch, which is a part of the famous King Ranch of Texas, and Frey Brothers’ cattle operation which is nearby For further details, please turn to page 131. August 4 is the date of the Lancaster County Poultry Queen Pageant. It will be held in the Farm and Home Center beginning at 7p.m. Elizabethtown Young Farmers will hold a plowing contest on Wednesday, August 2, at the Paul Hiestand farm between Maytown and Bambndge; a farm visitation day will be held m Adams County on Saturday, August 5, (See page 96 for details); and the Morrison’s Cove Dairy Show will begin in Martinsburg, Blair County, on August 1. Neighboring Maryland will hold a Farm Family Field Day at the Umversity of Maryland’s agronomy dairy research farm on August 3. Taking part in that event will be representatives from Via-Pax, embryo transplant specialists from Elizabethtown, Lancaster County. Details are printed on page 96. Area fairs which open their tents and gates this weekend include the Keystone Grange Fair at Trappe, the Goshen Country Fair m West Chester, and a number of 4-H Fairs in several Maryland counties. The Farm Calendar on page 10 lists them. An event which is going on today (July 29) is the Adams County Beef Field Day, scheduled to get underway at 9 p.m. at Pigeon Hill Farm near Abbottstown. Another beef cattle event is the Maryland Angus Association Breeders’ Show at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds in Gaither sburg. It gets underway tomorrow (Sunday). The following Sunday, August 6, marks the opening of the Lebanon Fair. For those interested in natural foods and natural living, the First Annual Natural Living Convention takes place at Bucknell University next weekend. We have details on page 99 of this week’s issue.
