Tuesday was also a good day for Kerry Boyd, Ephrata R 5. Although none of Boyd’s 12 hogs took grand cham pion, he did have the lightweight champion, the medium weight reserve champion, and both the champion and reserve champion heavyweight animals. The champion heavyweight then went on to be named the reserve champion of the entire show. Along with Boyd’s four champions, he took home five first-place and two second-place ribbons out of the 13 weight classes. Boyd also found satisfaction in showing the champion pen of 10. Although he had three breed champions in the 1974 FFA show Boyd considered Tuesday as “definitely the best day of my life for showing hogs.” Good’s grand champion hog was out of a York/Landrace sow and a Duroc boar as were four of the five hogs he entered m Tuesday’s competition. The gilt was less than five months old and was the seventh pig to farrow in the new house. “It’s a real fast growing pig,” Good pointed out. “I was afraid it wouldn’t make weight so I pushed it.” When asked how he managed to do so well in his first year, the easy-going youth smiled and modestly replied, “The pigs won the show, I didn’t.” Boyd’s 240 pound reserve champion was a Chester White/Duroc crossbred. The breeder was Tony Folker of Pork Chop Farm, New Holland R 2 The animal was purchased at the New Holland Annual FFA Feeder Pig Show and Sale held in April.
