Bomgardner 1.47 3 1.50 1.49 1.47 1.46 1.43 meeting 6 for 1.43 1.42 1.42 CORNING, lowa - In 20.000 letters to farmers and their leaders across the nation, President Oren Lee Staley of the National Farmers Organization (NFO) announced a mass meeting of farmers “for action on farm pricing” at Veterans Auditorium in Des Moines, lowa on Thursday, August 3 at 12:30 p.m. Staley’s letter told the recipients that it would be a “decision making meeting on big in which farmers and ranchers at tending would be asked to participate. Quoting a national business letter to the effect that in the early 1980’s 250.000 farmers would produce 92 per cent of the nation’s farm products, Staley said that time is short for farmers with less than a $2 million line of bank credit to survive in the farming business unless, by joint action, farm prices are pushed up to a cost-of production-plus level. The numbers who attend will be an important part in a decision. The discussion will center around organized farm power comparable to Big Business Power, Labor Power, Black Power, and other existing power groups.” The recipients were asked to line up two busloads of farmers from each county in the nation to come to Des Moines. “There will be a brief presentation of what the National Farmers Organization has built to implement collective bargaining for Agriculture, but no long speeches,” Staley said. “Farmers want cost of production. Time to achieve it is short if more than one out of seven present farmers are to survive in agriculture. Within the year, there must be a great surge forward in organizing FARM POWER or the opportunity to save family farming will be lost.” In 1977, U.S. farmers grossed nearly $2B billion from the sale of meat animals.
