Our Department en tomologists have surveyed potato acreage in Columbia, Luzerne and Schuylkill Counties and discovered that other registered insecticides have not been giving adequate control,” Shelhamer said. ‘‘ln recent years, DDT had brought the pest under control, but when DDT was banned, the beetle multiplied quickly. This problem has been magnified m the past two or three years because the Colorado potato beetle developed a tolerance to many of the insecticides registered for use against it.” Although potatoes are the major crop damaged by this pest, Shelhamer said that tomatoes can also be seriously damaged. Oc casionally the beetle will attack egg plant, peppers, and tobacco.
