16—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, July 1,1978 Livestock market an Omaha Cattle Thursday, June 29,1978 Compared with the previous midweek: slaughter steers closed .50- 1.25 lower, some late sales 1.50 off. Heifer prices were 1.00-2.00 lower than the general midweek trade of previous week. Cows were firm to .50 higher and bulls firm. Four day receipts 11,400 as compared 13,800 previous week and 19,600 a year ago. The fed cattle trade was characterized by a general bearishness throughout the period in reflection of a dull carcass trade, and most interests were not aggressive for numbers. Despite a moderate rate of slaughter, trade was slow on carcass beef at the wholesale level under a generally narrow demand. Many plants continued to operate at a reduced rate of slaughter in view of the poor movement of the finished product. Much of tbe steer and heifer supply was good to average-choice. Slaughter steers made up ap proximately 51 per cent and heifers 33 per cent. Cows comprised 10 per cent and feeders 4 per cent.
