Cattle
June 8,1978
Weekly 51 - Cattle -
compared with the previous
week’s close - closing prices
on slaughter steers were
2.25-2.50 lower and heifers
were 1.50-2.25 lower. Cows
closed 1.00-2.00 lower and
bulls were steady. Four day
receipts 14,900 as compared
15,100 previous week and
20,400 a year ago.
For the first tune in six
weeks, prices on fed steers
and heifers were lower than
at the end of the previous
week. The severe downturn
was enforced on Monday in
reflection of the combined
effects of liberal
marketings, a depressed
carcass trade and the week
end closing of a major

slaughterer; only a mild
price recovery was made as
supplies were sharply
curtailed after the initial
session. Receipts were quite
poorly distributed over the
trading period with nearly 60
per cent of the four-day total
arriving on Monday. Most
buying interests came into
the period in need of cattle
for near-term requirements
and there was a good
demand for cattle to be
slaughtered outside the
immediate Omaha area, but
trading was still charac
terized by a general air of
bearishness and caution.
There was a fairly liberal
volume of choice steers and
a modest volume choice and
prime; much of the heifer
supply was good to average
choice.
