€) Educator tells Conrad Weiser FFA and YFA that family life 9 education are in need of support By LAUREL SCHAEFFER Staff Correspondent ROBESONIA “Education is slowly dying of terminal cancer,” stated Dr. Riciiard Miller, school superintendent of the Conrad Weiser School District, to the many member* and guests of the FFA and YFA chapters of Conrad Weiser. “Parents have to start taking more time to learn to talk to their children and . fertilize this soil,” he said. This banquet was such an oc casion. Receiving Honorary Chapter Farmer Degrees from the Conrad Weiser FFA Chapter officers were Norman Bare, a local far mer; Terry Morgan and Rodney Herman, teachers; and Dr. Richard Miller, school superintendent. National Foundation awards were presented to: Donald Feeg for farm and homestead improvement, agricultural electrification, crop production, beef production, and diversified livestock production. Ernest Gelsinger received awards for dairy production and agriculture mechanics, Tom Meyer was cited for or namental horticulture, swine production, agriculture mechanics, and scholarship. The public speaking medal went to George Ludwig, while Sam Ferraro received fruit and vegetable production and forestry medals. Soil and water management was presented to Ken Shealey and poultry production to Todd Lynn. Star Greenhand was Henry Noss and Star Chapter Partner was Donald Feeg, chapter president, - who was also named th«> Outstanding Semor. Scholas tic awards for outstanding efforts in the total academic progic.m were presented to: Tom Meyer, 12th grade; Donald Feeg, 11th grade; Todd Lynn, 10th grade; and Henry Noss, 9th grade. Project book awards were given to Donald Feeg, Er nest Gelsinger, and Todd Lynn, and placing highest in seed sales were Henry Noss, David Shaffer, and Sam Ferraro, respectively. Land judging awards were presented to several FFA members by the Berks Soil and Conservation Service for placing in the County Con test. David Groff was cited for placing second and Leon Stauffer was recognized for his fourth place position. Distributing awards for the Young Farmers Chapter was Levern Barrett, department head and ad visor to both chapters. Norman Bare and Allen Gaul were presented with awards for attendance, both having attended every meeting. Lester Gelsinger received a plaque from Farm Credit Association as The Outstanding Farmer at Conrad Weiser and in Berks County. Com Contest awards went to: Nelson Troutman for 149 bushels per acre with o’s Gold; Harold Heck, 143 bushels with Piqneer -3369A;* Lester Gelsinger, 141 bushels with Pioneer 3335, and Robert Meyer for 138 bushels per acre with Funk’s 4520. Placing highest in com quality were Lester Gelsinger, Harold Heck, John Blatt, and Donald Duncan, in that order.
