Harmful heavy metals such as zinc, copper, cadmium, andlead have been found in the livers and kidneys of muskrats, syas Dr. James Sr-Lindzey, leader of the Cooperative Wildlife Research Unit at Penn State. Lindzey indicated mar shes may contain harmful heavy metals due to chemical leaching from upstream landfills. Nitrogen effluent, another con taminant, may reach marches from nearby sewage treatment plants. Chemical leaching can bring calcium, magnesium, chlorides, and sulfates into the marshes. PHONE: 665-2407 pollution was found by graduate assistant David W. Erickson of Bradford in analyzing freshwater tidal marshes of the Tinipum National Environmental Center near Philadelphia. Polluting forms of nitrogen as well as ortho phosphate, also from sewage, were found in highest con centrations in water near the Darby Creek Joint Authority sewage treatment facility. Highest concentrations of Heavy metals were found along Darby Creek, a highly urbanized watershed, and in portions of the marsh where tidal waters from the Delaware River were strongest. At the same time, highest levels of calcium, magnesium, chlorides, and sulfates were present some distance from Darby Creek created by solutions leaching from the unused Folcroft Landfill. Seed grain inspection waived WASHINGTON, D.C. - As of March 22, the US. Department of Agriculture waived inspection and 4-H talent show held DAVIDSBURG Davidsburg 4-H club held a talent show after their business meeting on March 16. Seventeen acts were en tered in the contest. First prize went to ' Karen Rahlman, who did a baton routine to Stars & Stripes Forever. She received $lO as prize money. Second went to Emily Livingston, who did a demonstration on Candles and received $5. Third went to Wayne Eyster and Hans Spahr. They did a piano duet and received $3. Fourth place went to Audrey and Annette Sher meyer. Fifth was Carolyne Jacobs. She did a piano solo and received $l. Light refreshments were enjoyed after the show. Lancaster Farming, Saturday, April l, 1978 Erickson’s research disclosed that highest concentrations of lead in muskrat liver tissues oc curred on sites where high concentrations of the metal existed in marsh sediments and vegetation-especially the narrow-leaved cattail, an important food for muskrats. It was noted, however, that other factors appear to influence the level of a particular metal in a specific animal. For example, male muskrats contained significatnly less cadmium in their kidneys thatn females. In addition, adults contained higher levels of kidney cadmium than juveniles. The muskrats were checked for body measurements, organ weights, and reproductive performance. Animals from weighing of export grain used for seeding purposes. Leland E. Bartelt, ad ministrator of USDA’s Federal Grain Inspection Service (FGIS), said the change is being made to facilitate the exporting of seed grain. At present, anyone ex porting seed grain, he said, must apply for an individual waiver from the inspection and weighing requirements, although grain sold for seed purposes is rarely sold by official grade. Under the new procedure, export seed grain will be exempted from the in spection and weighing requirements, providing that it is consigned for sale as seed; is labeled as to kind, purity, germination and ne' weight; is identified for seeding purposes on the shipper’s export declaration; and the per tinent papers are made available, on request, to FGIS. Bunnell Auction Service Springville. Pa. PH: 965-2375 varying pollution zones did not differ significantly in measurements such as weight, length, and girth. Reproductive differences between four study areas were not detected, possibly due to the small number of breeding females collected. Muskrat activity signs droppings, tracks, and food cuttings—showed no variation in numbers of muskrats among the study sites. Dr. Lmdzey pointed out that long range studies are needed for a more complete appraisal of the impacts of environmental pollutants on animal populations such as muskrats. “SPECIAL" FEEDER SALES FOR YOUR CATTLE & PIGS These sales are for your cattle!
