Currently, indemnities are limited to $4O per bead for grade animals and $9O per bead for purebreds. Since today’s market values greatly exceed these rates, the sheep industry asked USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) to increase the indemnity rates. Sheep scrapie is an in curable disease charac terized by a long incubation period 18 to 42 months or longer and progressive deterioration of the central nervous system. It affects only sheep and goats, but is similar to nervous disorders in other animals and man.
