Survey set to update
farm production costs
HARRISBURG - State
Agriculture Secretary Kent
Shelhamer has announced
that the Pennsylvania Crop
Reporting Service, m
cooperation with the U.S.
Department of Agriculture,
will be conducting a survey
during February and March
to determine 1977 farm
production expenditures.
Shelhamer said that farm
production outlays must be
closely watched in order to
provide a realiable measure
of the farmers’ economic
well being in relation to
other groups in the national
economy.
Shelhamer noted that in
1976 farmers in the United
States paid out over $B9
billion to produce crops,
livestock and poultry. The
results of last year’s survey
issued by USDA and the crop
Reporting Service showed

There will be a couple of purebred heifers out of
Avignon. Also 15 head of purebred short yearling
heifers mostly all polled. These heifers are not bred.

said that farmers would be
asked questions concerning
their outlays for equipment
and services along with
other production needs for
1977. In addition, farmers
will be asked about their
marketing practices for
livestock, field crops, fruits,
and vegetables.
Fluke said that farmers’
responses will be con
fidential. Only state and
national summaries of
survey results will be

The 7th Annual Production
Sale of gilts and boars was
held at the Lebanon Area
Fair Grounds, Lebanon, Pa.
on February 24th. Leon
Arnold reported 74 bidders.
The 10 Duroc bred gilts
averaged $369; the 15 Duroc
Boars averaged $306; and
the 21 Duroc open gilts
averaged $172.
The 44 Yorkshire bred gilts
averaged $400; the 13
Yorkshire boars averaged
$283; and the 29 Yorkshire
open gilts averaged $159.
