I named the calf “Lucky” because she was fortunate to be alive. But that wasn’t all. I was lucky to have her too. Although she represented everything in dairy cattle breeding that was to be avoided, Dad con sented to allowing me to raise her. It was really something, especially since Dad knew he’d never get a return on that investment His prediction turned out to be very accurate. “Lucky” never milked much when she freshened two years later. But “Lucky” was special nonetheless. She was the first calf I could call my own, and like other first loves, she wasn’t to be forgotten. AnderSons Lancaster Farming, Saturday, February 25,1978 LIFE By Dieter Krieg “Lucky” was a sad sight on that day when she was born Talk of not keeping her .had been heard numerous times in previous weeks. Sympathy grew swiftly, however, as I watched her in her bed of straw She looked almost as though she knew she wasn’t born into a home on the farm. It didn’t take long before “Lucky” and 1 were the best of companions. All it took was Dad’s assurance that I could keep her. From that moment on, she received the best of care. Aside from the regular feedings of warm milk, she was petted and brushed and even talked to. Wat ching her stand and walk on thin, unsteady legs was a delight. Later, when her legs strengthened and she knew her friends, she became very playful when we entered her pen. She was a happy little heifer, and lust like a human being, she wanted to share her enthusiasm for life Especially life on the farm 17
