—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, February 18,1978 126 Atlantic honors KULPSVILLE - Eastern Berks - Bucks - Montgomery area dairymen were honored for having high producing herds this past year at the fourteenth annual District 1 meeting for Atlantic Breeders Cooperative members held February 14 at Palm Schwenkfelder Church. Those receiving Cer tificates of Merit for having top DHEA averages were: Joseph Peters, Danboro, 48.3 cows, 18,007 pounds of milk, 681 of fat; Walter Wurster, Ottsville, 58.6 cows, 16,927 pounds of milk, 653 of fat; Harold Halteman, Telford, 60.2 cows, 18,012 pounds of milk, 703 of fat; Richard Bechtel, Harleysville, 37.2 cows, 16,937 pounds of milk, 668 of fat; and Gehringer Bros., Bally, 57.6 cows, 14,554 pounds of milk, 618 of fat. All herds were at least 15 per cent above the state average for milk or butterfat production last year, while at least two-thirds of the cows m these herds are progeny of Atlantic sires. Several members were also cited for their assistance in using young sires this past year, as the Cooperative continues its PJ. Gehringer extensive program of testing the true genetic merit of some 30 bulls per year through random matings in many different herds. Reports by District 1 Director Harold Haldeman of Doylestown, and management representative David Yoder, Lane Jter, informed members that 1977 was a very successful business year for Atlantic. Service Technicians provided nearly 300,000 services, and semen sales continued to be profitable. Atlantic sires maintained their rating among the nation’s best for tran smitting profitable traits, Yoder said. A 25-mmute movie was shown to help members understand the importance of sound type traits for both production and reproduc tion. The application of this principle through Atlantic’s Mate-Rite program was also top dairymen explained as an aid to breeding improved cattle. Atlantic members who were patrons in 1965 recently Harold Halteman received a cash refund totaling over $56,000. New equities have been issued to members active in 1977, amounting to 9% of gross revenue for the year.
