New com hybrids
BLOOMINGTON, 111. - Six
new com hybrids, five of
which are adapted to the
Com Belt and one for the
Mid and Deep South, have
been released in in
troductory quantities for
1978 by the Producers of
Funk’s G-Hybrids.
The earliest maturing of
the new hybrids is G-4171, a
95 day 3-way hybrid which is
adapted to the far northern
com growing regions. G-4171
performed well as an ex
perimental hybrid under the
stress conditions ex
perienced in the western
regions in 1976 and 1977. The
hybrid also features good
stalk quality.

In the 100-day maturity,
group 2 classification is G
-4224. A single cross, G-4224
has excellent stalk quality
and yields exceptionally well
when grown as a mid to full
season hybrid. G-4224 is
widely adapted across the
entire Com Belt.
G-4323 is a high yielding
single cross with a maturity
rating of 110 days. It features
long slender ears with ex
ceptional grain quality.
Tests show that G-4323 dries
down fast and has good stalk
and root structure. Its
moisture at harvest is
comparable to one of Funk’s
leading hybrids, G-4321A.

G-4583 is a high yielding 3-
way cross with good heat
and drought tolerance. It can
be used in dryland as well as
irrigated management
systems. It features good
stalk and superb grain
quality. G-4583 is tolerant to
Leaf Freckles and Wilt
(Goss’s Wilt).
For the Eastern Corn Belt,
G 4606 is particularly well
suited. It is a consistent
superior yielder under both
stress and optimum growing
conditions. It can be planted
at high populations and
stands well, even under
tough conditions.
G-4709 is a new single
cross that is well adapted to
the Mid and Deep South. It
features good early vigor
and consistent performance.
G-4709 is particularly well
suited to center pivot
irrigation because of its
medium height.
Ever wonder how much
the farmer gets when you
buy a dollar’s worth of food?
Figures for 1977 show the
farmer received the
following percentages for
some basic foods: meat 55
per cent, dairy 51 per cent,
poultry 58 per cent, eggs 67
per cent, cereals 12 per cent,
fresh fruit 30 per cent, fresh
vegetables 30 per cent,
processed fruits and
vegetables 17 percent, fats
and oils 33 per cent and other
food types 13 per cent.
Maryland, like most other
states, has seen a steady
decline in the number of
farmers and farms. In 1967
there were 20,400 farms m
the state, by 1972 this had
dropped to 18,200 and by 1977
was down to 17,500. Farm
acreage also slipped from
3.35 million acres a decade
ago, to an estimated 2.9
million Maryland acres in
farms today.
