The earliest maturing of the new hybrids is G-4171, a 95 day 3-way hybrid which is adapted to the far northern com growing regions. G-4171 performed well as an ex perimental hybrid under the stress conditions ex perienced in the western regions in 1976 and 1977. The hybrid also features good stalk quality. A single cross, G-4224 has excellent stalk quality and yields exceptionally well when grown as a mid to full season hybrid. G-4224 is widely adapted across the entire Com Belt. G-4323 is a high yielding single cross with a maturity rating of 110 days. It features long slender ears with ex ceptional grain quality. It can be used in dryland as well as irrigated management systems. It features good stalk and superb grain quality. G-4583 is tolerant to Leaf Freckles and Wilt (Goss’s Wilt). For the Eastern Corn Belt, G 4606 is particularly well suited. It is a consistent superior yielder under both stress and optimum growing conditions. It can be planted at high populations and stands well, even under tough conditions. G-4709 is a new single cross that is well adapted to the Mid and Deep South. It features good early vigor and consistent performance. G-4709 is particularly well suited to center pivot irrigation because of its medium height. Ever wonder how much the farmer gets when you buy a dollar’s worth of food? Figures for 1977 show the farmer received the following percentages for some basic foods: meat 55 per cent, dairy 51 per cent, poultry 58 per cent, eggs 67 per cent, cereals 12 per cent, fresh fruit 30 per cent, fresh vegetables 30 per cent, processed fruits and vegetables 17 percent, fats and oils 33 per cent and other food types 13 per cent. Maryland, like most other states, has seen a steady decline in the number of farmers and farms. In 1967 there were 20,400 farms m the state, by 1972 this had dropped to 18,200 and by 1977 was down to 17,500. Farm acreage also slipped from 3.35 million acres a decade ago, to an estimated 2.9 million Maryland acres in farms today.
