HARRISBURG - Red
meat production in Penn
sylvania during December
1977 totaled 96.6 million
pounds, down two per cent
from a year earlier ac
cording to the Pennsylvama
Crop Reporting Service.
Cattle slaughter at 88,100
head was down three per
cent from a year earlier, calf
slaughter at 31,00 head was
down 16 per cent, hog
slaughter at 268,900 head
was down nine per cent, and
sheep and lambs at 11,100
head were down eight per
cent.
Nationally, commercial
red meat production during
December 1977 totaled 3.2
billion pounds, down four per
cent from a year earlier.
Cattle slaughter was down
one per cent, calf slaughter
was down eight per cent, hog
slaughter was down five per
cent, and sheep and lambs
were down 17 per cent.

Sandra Markey, York County’s new apple queen, offers a sample of an apple
treat to Dr. Glenn Shaw, president of the county fruit growers' association. The
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Markey, York RB, Sandra took part this week in
activities at the State Horticulture Association meeting in Hershey.
Steve Neely joins Sire Power

Power’s Sire Development
team as sire programs
consultant January Ist,
according to Lloyd Ebersole,
director of Sire Develop
ment. Neely’s primary
responsiblity will be
analyzing herds throughout
Sire Power’s growing
market area. In addition he
will assist in gathering type
information on bulls
Maryland farmers in 1977

business agriculture can be.
Rough weather and lowered
crop prices for three key
crops showed that farmers
(on the average) lost $29.36
per acre on their com crops,
made $7.23 per acre for
wheat and $12.30 per acre for
soybeans.

Program. Neely will be
joining sire analyst, Amon
Grantham to further expand
the program.
Neely grew up on a
Holstein farm near
Emlenton, Pennsylvania. He
graduated in 1976 from Penn
State University majormg in
animal industry with em
phasis in dairy science.
At Penn State, Neely
participated in the Dairy
Science Club, Ag Student
Council, Coaly Society (an
agricultural activities
honorary) and Delta Theta
Sigma fraternity. He was
also a member of the 1974
Penn State dairy judging
team.
In December Neely
completed requirements at
the University of Con
necticut for a Masters
