Eshleman speaks to Farm and Home Foundation
LANCASTER -
Honorable Ed Eshleman
was the featured speaker at
the 14th annual meeting of
the Farm and Home
Foundation of Lancaster
County. With an attendance
of over 100 people listening,
the former member of the
U.S. House of Represen
tatives gave his impressions
of the media over the past
decade.
Basically, Eshleman
stated that although he
realized that there was
plenty to criticize in the
United States in the past ten
years, he still believes that
this country is the best place
in the world to live. He noted
that the U.S. contributes
more to the charity of the
world than any other nation.
However, Eshleman went
on to state that he feels that
the news media is too
negative, choosing to print
bad news on the front page of
papers, and concentrate on
the negative side of life on
TV and radio. He added that
he fails to see how con
centrating on the negative
aspect sells papers.
Eshleman went on to note

that he believes the people of
the U.S. aren’t sick, and
don’t need the news of such
depressing nature on the
frontpage.
“Negative news has a
psychological effect on
people,” Eshleman ex
plained. “It gives people a
negative outlook towards
their country.”
The
Eshleman closed his
speech by stressing that
after every crisis this
country has come out
stronger and he believed
that this will be the case in
the future.
Under other business at
the meeting, the president of
the foundation. Jay E.
Landis, reported that the
financial condition of the
Farm and Home Center was
good, although expenses
continued to rise over the
past year.
A treasurer’s report was
given. Foundation members
are hopeful that the debt
owed on the Farm and Home
Center would be wiped out
within the next two years.
Income for the 1977 year was
reported at $71,936, with
expenses listed at $58,128.
