Fanning, Saturday, January 14,197 S Two counties dominate grain exhibits HARRISBURG - Lehigh and Cumberland County exhibitors captured six championships in small grains judging'competition at the 62nd Farm Show. Ed Widcard Carlisle won the grand championship in oats classes; Bans Fritz of Lock Haven showed the grand champion sample of wheat; and Robert Enders of Halifax exhibited the champion barley sample. Soybeans classes were won by Grant Grim of Dreinigsville; Japanese buckwheat classes by Clark Mantz, of New Tripoli; and Pennquad buckwheat by Donald Haas of Orefield. David Keeschner of New Tripoli showed the winning rye sample, and Vernon E. Wickhard of Carlisle exhibited the champion timothy sample. Five champions named HARRISBURG - State corn growers who produced the highest yields in the machine and hand harvest divisions of the 1977 Penn sylvania 5-Acre Corn Club were honored Monday at the 62nd Farm Show. Winners were announced by Dr. Joseph H. McGahen, Penn State Extension agronomist. The program is sponsored by the Penn State Extension Service and supported by the Penn sylvania Master Corn Growing Association, Pennsylvania Seedsmen Association, and com mercial seed industry. Winner of the shelled grain harvested class was Homer, Campbell, of Elizabetfaville Rl, with a yield of 217.3 bushels per acre. Campbell, who grew 525 acres of corn in 1977, used Pioneer Brand 3535. Plant population was 19,571 per acre in 30 inch rows. In, the ear com harvested class, Dennis BrechbiU, of Chambersburg Rl, was declared champion with a yield of 212.3 bushels per acre. He grew. 300 acres in 1977 using Pioneer Brand 3334 A. Plant population was 21,133 per acre in 30-inch rows. David and Richard Martin, of Volant Rl, were named corn growing champions *■ in the shelled grain harvested class over a three-year period. Their average yield during the three years was 174.5 bushels per acre. Winner of the ear com harvested class over a three year pdrfod was George Stambaugh, of Newville Rl, with a yield of 184.2 bushels per acre.
