24 —Lancaster Farming, Saturday, December 17,1977 WHAT'S NEW LINEAR IRRIGATION Valmont Industries of Valley, Neb. has introduced a continuous linear move irrigation system, called the Valley Rainger, which provides 98 per cent field coverage of fields up to 220 acres. This new system utilizes land given up today for borders which may amount to eight to 10 per cent of the acreage. The linear or straight line application accomodates sophisticated harvesting equipment by avoiding the problem of crossing wheel tracks common to center pivots. The Rainger offers the opportunity to convert flood irrigated land, even, the corners, for as little as $300.00 per acre, and on many fields the present ditch or canal water delivery system can be utilized. The linear sprinkler system features low pressure water application, and it provides an economical alternative over permanently installed irrigation equipment above or below ground. In many instances the development with a linear is half what it would be for a permanent system and still providing precise water distribution, HOOBER'S Headquarters For: E- U CHAIN - SAWS DECEMBER SPECIAL - MODEL 702VL Big saw performance with Vibe-Less comfort. One of the major ad vantages of the continuous linear movement is the savings in energy, labor and water which hre all becoming higher priced and more precious in their supply. By using low pressure and a canal or ditch as the water source, the energy for pumping is greatly reduced. The water is released uniformly along 'the pipeline as each sprinkler emits an equal amount, so there’s reduced pressure because the majority of the water isn’t being forced to the outer end as is the case with pivot systems. Thus, crop growth is uniform end to end. Labor is cut to the bone as one person can manage up to ten systems. The back breaking labor, land preparation and maintenance associated with flood methods is eliminated, so the annual operating costs become a known cost, and it’s an irrigation method that can be depended upon because equipment is always available and simple for anyone to operate. savings in water over *269 95 SALES & SERVICE INTERCOURSE, PA flooding can be from 25 to 40 per cent, and the salinity problems which have been amplified through heavy water application methods are greatly reduced and better controlled. The water application with a con tinuous move system has a high coefficient of unifor mity in excess of 90 per cent over the entire length of the field. The amount' of water applied may be varied to accommodate the irrigation requirements for each stage ■of crop growth, and this is possible because there are positive and recordable dial settings. This' is ac complished by a percentage timer which determines the travel speed. The Rainger also accomodates new water management practices such as drops, furrow blocking and controlled traffic tillage. The control of the system is centered at the master tower which runs along side the water source. The controls are common to other Valley electric center pivots, and the guidance of the system! ollows the same principle as that utilized for the proven Valley Comer System. Guidance is based on a wire follow design in which a low frequency signal flows throughj buried wire which emits a signal. The sensing antenna on the middle drive unit is self-aligning and guides the system along the wire in a straight line, and at the end of the field a shut down provides automatic system kill without the presence of an operator. The slope limitations restrict the system to basically flat fields, currently either flood irrigated or suitable for flood development, but slight surface irregularities can be negotiated during for ward or reverse irrigations. The system can be run wet or dry, and the power for the direct coupled pump and system propulsion is provided by s shock mounted air-cooled Deutz diesel engine. It operates with up to LIST *329” 72 hours on the fuel carried with the system. ' These Rainger systems have been operating on a variety of crops in California and Arizona, including grapes, sugar beets, com, alfalfa and cereal crops, as the major concentration of these units is. expected to be in areas with developed surface water sources, water shortages and higher than normal problems. Systems are available for immediate delivery, and after the announcement to the Valley national dealer organization at Phoenix there has been .extreme interest for installations in Georgia, Wisconsin, Michigan, Missouri, North Dakota and other states with large concentrations of cent hogs that look healthy can lose more money than one like this: The respiratory complex is a major cause of “hidden” disease losses. Hogs may appear healthy, but many can be fighting off disease and .losing efficiency. Pneumonia is a key factor in the respiratory disease complex But it’s often brought on by atrophic rhinitis. Atrophic rhinitis is an infection in the hog’s snout By damaging the air passageway which normally filters out dust and bacteria —-atrophic-rhinitis opens the door for pneumonia. Tylan Plus Sulfa is the only feed additive cleared for both atrophic rhinitis and pneumonia It has proved its ability to treat pneumonia, and to maintain weight gams and feed efficiency in the presence of atrophic rhinitis That’s why we recommend it v FOR MORE INFORMATION SEE YOUR FEED SUPPLIER SERVICED BY NEW HOLLAND SUPPLY CO. jr" GIVE HIM A REMINGTON CHAIN SAW g for CHRISTMAS Teasy to handle I REMiNC" nr | CHAIN SAW I *99® 6 I bar and chain EASY TO HANDLE, FUN TO USE I Ernest B .
