112—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, November 12,1977 Two stay in Pa, at Livestock Exposition Most breeding sheep honors go out of state By JOANNE SPAHR HARRISBURG Exhibitors from Ohio and Maryland dominated breeding sheep competition Monday at the Keystone International Livestock Exposition with only two of the champion titles going to Pennsylvania exhibitors. In the Cheviot classes, Delaware Valley College, Doylestown, showed the champion ewe, a Spring lamb named “DVC Lass 365” And, in the Dorset classes, John R. Sevick of Pennsylvania Furnace, showed the reserve cham pion ram with a Fall ram lamb. According to Rodney Gilbert, Doylestown, livestock superintendent for Delaware Valley College, the champion ewe was a February lamb sired by Erdenheim Lad 122, and bred at the college. All totaled, the college raises about 18 or 20 ewes as well as yearlings and lambs. Along with Cheviots, they also raise Hampshires and Suffolks. Entries from Ohio took three of four premier exhibitor awards given out during judging Monday and a Maryland farm was named as the fourth. Clarence Williamson and Sons, Xenia, Ohio, dominated Oxford sheep classes, taking all but one major award. Their Spring ewe lamb, “Williamson 7711” was named champion ewe. The champion ram, “Johnson 712,” was a Spring ram lamb. Champion ewe honors in Dorset competition went to “Grey 360,” a Fall lamb exhibited by Elizabeth S Grey of Woodbine, Md. Martin Brothers of Willard, Ohio, were named premier exhibitors in the Cheviot classes, showing the reserve champion ewe and ram. Their Spring lamb, “Martin Bros 482,” was reserve champion ewe and their Spring ram lamb, “Martin Bros. 485,” was reserve champion ram. Robert and Edith Kelly of Enfield, Conn., showed the' champion Cheviot ram, a Fall ram lamb. W. G. Carpenter and Sons, Jefferson, Maryland, swept all major Southdown awards in breeding sheep com petition en route to their premier exhibitor award. Their champion ewe, “Snowhite 1968-77”, is a Spring ewe lamb, and their champion ram, a Fall ram lamb, is named “Snowhite 1957-77 ” Other Pennsylvanians placing in the top five of the various classes of breeding sheep were: Cheviots - Robert E. Ag Week exhibits set BALTIMORE, Md. - The Maryland Agriculture Week Committee’s series of traveling exhibits will visit at least five counties and Baltimore City according to exhibits chairman, Roy D. Porter. The first stop will be in Baltimore City at the world famous Lexington Market during Baltimore’s traditional “Downtown Country Fair” which runs November 14 through 19. Other locations to be visited include Montgomery County, Frederick, Salisbury, Anne Arundel County, and Hagerstown. Arrangements for exhibit tours in Baltimore and Howard counties are being made and will be announced later.
