12—Lancaster Fanning, Saturd 1 LIFE on the farm We had a couple of fellows live in our neighborhood who were in the Halloween spirit the year around. Only with them the trick portion was all that mattered in trick or treating. Perhaps it was the fact that we had some old, abandoned buildings, a few black cats, and even bats, that got the boys into their frequent mood for pranks. More likely, however, it was tneir mborne desire for mischief. Roaming the countryside by dark, they’d pitch ears of corn at cars, topple mailboxes and help them selves to gasoline for a car they weren’t licensed to drive. Halloween or not, they were up to their tricks on a routine basis. It was common enough that we often pinned blame on those teen-aged rascals even though we had no proof who did the deed. From time to time, we were left with a broken window, a disassembled piece of equipment, flat tire, or missing part. Every meghbor, including our selves, was convinced the boys were incorrigible, and not much time would ever elapse before one of them WAY# LHEMDRYX TRUCKING CO. October 29,1977 would ascertain that conviction. One farmer took one or two of the boys to court one year after having caught them stealing gas at his farm. It did no good, however, since the jury pretty near insisted on seeing the culprit with gas can in hand. Whenever state police cruisers drove by, it usually meant they were looking for the local villains. That didn’t do much good either. We usually got along amiably enough, I must say. My brother and I usually took care of that in one way or another For instance, they never tossed corn at my car when I drove by, realizing that I’d be ornery enough to chase them until I had them collared Although we never quite eliminated the frustrating moments when we found something broken or missing, we got a lot of heifer pens cleaned out for nothing. And it was all done by hand, too. They knew we’d come after them if we got riled enough, and dealing that way required no jury or police officer. To a degree, it built respect. One incident was maddening at first out ended with me having the last laugh, despite a little extra work. It was on a Halloween night and a prank was naturally suspected. So I waited for them in the shadows outside the barn and watched them go about their mischief. When they were just about done hiding milking equipment, letting a couple of cows York Countians sweep judging contest TIMONIUM, Md. - York County teams swept all competition in the Junior Stockman’s judging contest held at the Eastern National Livestock Exposition in Timonium, Md., recently. Whereas one farm worker produced enough to feed himself and 19 others 20 years ago, he can now feed 56 people besides himself. C. J. WONSIDLER BROS.
