Iron Horse sired the recent champion market hog of the Eastern National show which commanded $lOO per pound or a total of $24,500. By JOANNE SPAHR STEWARTSTOWN - When that record-breaking $lOO per pound was paid for the grand champion market hog at the Eastern National Livestock Show in the beginning of October, the news spread like wildfire throughout the livestock marketing world. But, for one farmer near York County, the news had a much bigger impact than for many others. That farmer was John Strawbridge, a swine raiser from Stewartstown who owns the boar that bred the record-breaking $24,500 hog. Strawbndge, known and recognized for his top quality Hampshires and Yorkshires, sold a pair of purebred Hampshire bred gilts to John Muncaster from Hamilton, Va., last March. After the gilts farrowed in April, Muncaster sold 10 out of the two litters to Tommy Payne, the Virginia 4-H’er who The dairy industry is the second largest single segment of American agriculture. Previous to Eastern Nationals, another pig out of one of the two bred sows purchased by Mun caster, and then sold to Payne, was named the grand champion market barrow of all breeds at the Virginia State Fair. At $5.05 per that animal was one of the highest priced hogs ever sold in Virginia.
