Milking starts at 3 o’clock every morning and af ternoon. There are usually three men milking at one time in the large herring bone milking parlor. Besides the students and the farm supervisors, there are also two other full time men on the farm. Steve Carpenter is the herdsman, while David Derth handles the crops and fieldwork. There are about 95 to 100 cows on test at any one time with an average production of 14,800 pounds of milk and 520 pounds of butterfat. Last year the top cow produced 23,000 pounds, Hameloth noted. Hameloth has been with Teen Challenge for about three years. He had for merly farmed for himself in Wisconsin. For him, this is a perfect situation, he says with a gleam in his eye. “I have always loved fanning and I wanted to help people. I was thinking of joining the Peace Corps but I decided that there are many people right in my own country which also need help.” he explained. “Some of these people have never worked before in their lives,” the farm supervisor said with astonishment. Most of the men at Teen Challenge come from urban backgrounds, a few from rural areas, Lancaster Fanning was told. Most of these men are really amazed at what they can learn, continued Hameloth. To some every job is a miracle and opens new meaning to them. Hameloth went on to Firewood (Continued from Page 102) chinking should be checked for loose bricks, broken flue linings, and excessive soot. Any problems found should be corrected. When starting a fire, the person should always be sure the damper is open. Loose fitting clothing should not be worn near an open flame. Finally the damper should always be closed when the fire is out. One student had stated that he never really was aware of the different plants which made up a green field or lawn. “It was just green to me,” he was remembered to have said. Many of the students are overwhelmed when they are given a responsibility and are trusted to see that it is done right. Sometimes it is the first responsibility that they have ever had, as was the case of another student who was given the task of making certain the electric fence was always working. “You can’t realize how much that meant to that boy,” Hameloth explained. The center does not sup port the farm, it supports itself and has to be run at a profit. “To produce and teach at the same time is very difficult,” Hameloth stated. “We are always getting new workers on the farm and we continually teach them good work habits. It seems just as we get the students to a point where they are dependable we have to train a new (Continued on Page 112) way. Ordinary fireplaces deliver to a room only about a tenth of the heating value of wood, the being lost in heating the amount of excess air passing out of the room through the chimney. However, a chimney damper closed down as much as possible, will slow the amount of air taken from the room. A duct supplying air to the fire from outside of the building will tend to conserve the heated air inside the room. 105
