recently, prices have ex
tended upwards to $5O per
ewe in some areas.
Successful breeding
programs can be ac
complished with older ewes,
but older animals have some
special problems which
must be carefully managed.
Buyers should check the
ewe’s mouth for broken or
excessively worn teeth, the
udder for any disease or
lamb feeding problems, the
hooves for injuries or
disease, especially on range
animals.

Older ewes can be a bonus,
because of their greater
twinning possibilities, but
twinning and age also mean
special nutrition and care
programs. For example, one
will have to care for bum
lambs if ewes have udder or
milk problems where lamb
feeding is impossible.
Experienced sheep
producers are familiar with
some of the special feeding
and care which will help to
bring about a successful
lamp crop. However, new or

Dwight Holaway, National
Sheep Production Coor

Sheep Producers Council
(ASPC) said that he is very

encourage newcomers to

business to enter now.
However, lack of in
formation can lead to serious
financial problems. We want
to help avoid that situation.”
