Fred Funk, Millersville, who grows
three and a half acres of pumpkins, began
his harvesting last week. He calls his
harvest very good, with healthy vines, and
having enough rain over the summer
months to get by. He noted that his
pumpkins are a medium size with a good
orange color to them.
When talking about the growing season.
Funk noted that this year he sprayed his
fields with more fungicide, but he felt
there were no real problems in his fields.

head
Lancaster Farming, Saturday, September 24,1977—X3
spoke enthusiastically about a pumpkin
decorating contest that his market
sponsors for children, giving a prize to the
winner. He mentioned that in the past,
some of the creations were very unusual
and outstanding.
A newcomer to the pumpkin growing,
John Shenk, Lititz R 6, spoke to Lancaster
Fanning about his first year of pumpkin
growing. He grew one acre of pumpkins
this year, using a special variety, that is
supposed to be good for pies, use as jack-o
lantems, and the roasting of the seeds.
Shenk thought he had a successful year
in the pumpkin growing, and added that in
his opinion, the past season was a good
year for growing the crop.
