First year 4-H’er takes Solanco beef show title By JOANNE SPAHR QUARRYVILLE - 4-H’ers and FFA members com peted against each other for the grand champion baby beef of the Solanco Fair on Thursday evening with a 13- year-old first year 4-H member walking away with the coveted title. Brett Holzhauer, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Holzhauer, Holtwood Rl, exhibited a 1025 pound Angus/Chianina crossbred to the champion of the 4-H show and the eventual grand champion overall. In the reserve champion slot for the entire show was a 1085 pound Angus/Sim mental crossbred shown by Bryan Groff, 16, the son of Donald L. Groff, Peach Bottom Rl. Groff, a member of the Solanco FFA, showed beef for the first time this year. Judge Henry Gruber, head of livestock procurement for Arbogast and Bastian, Inc., Allentown, praised the champion for being “a little trimmer, a little neater looking, and a more stylish calf” then the reserve champion. Holzhauer, a member of the 4-H Red Rose Beef and Sheep Club, plans on taking his champion, purchased from Fred Frey, Quarryville, to Farm Show, Groff’s FFA champion and reserve champion of show, which was sold in Friday’s sale, was “not a cheap” animal, he commented. Rather than starting with an average quality animal, he went to top quality, which he ADVANCED AGRICULTURE, INC/s 3rd ANNUAL FIELD DAY ★ DEMONSTRATIONS OF EQUIPMENT * felt helped him win the FFA title. The crossbred was purchased at the Octorara Farm Club Calf sale. The reserve champion of the FFA show went to Sam Long, Peach Bottom Rl for his lightweight crossbred.
