18—Lancaster Farming, Saturday. September 10,1977 During fair week, no one’s at home in Quarryville By SUSAN KAUFFMAN Feature Writer QUARRYVILLE, Pa. - Next week’s Lancaster Fanning will contain a number of pictures and stories about the ribbon and premium winners at the Solanco Community Fair. Week after week this time of year the media is crammed with reports of grand champions and best of show winners. Although the competition and awarding of prizes are the most obvious aspects of country fairs, these events mean a lot more than ribbons and parades. Initally, there must be a community spirit that makes them happen. The Southern Lancaster County Conuninity Fair is one example of the many the talents of the people in the communities which support a local fair. These public events need not only the prize winning fruit growers, cattle breeders, bakers or sewers, but also those people who can manage such complicated events, and those who can tirelessly solicit funds and donations of time and timely skills ranging from car pentry to rolling potpie dough. The Solanco Fair calls for so much support that nearly all the organizations in the area, civic and church alike, leave fair week open on their calendars. One minister, upon completing his second year in the community, remarked, “I’ve discovered that you do not make any plans for extra meetings during fair week in this area. You have to go out to the fair if you want to see anyone! ” A recent visit out to the JUST ONE HAND ! A completely NEW concept in gardening ma chines! (Please Print Clearly) Mr. Mrs. Miss Address City Fairgrounds by Lancaster Farming proved that last minute items of business were under way. Tents were being unloaded to ac comodate the exhibits which continually increase in number faster than con struction of permanent facilities can be completed. Mrs. Jane Miller, Association secretary, was making calls to arrange parking stickers and paper supplies. When asked how many people are directly involved with the respln sibility of the fair proceedings, she remarked that in addition to the of ficers and directors, there were - general committee members and department heads for exhibits which tallied a total of 57 people who received invitations to the frequent board meetings held throughout the year. Add to that, the number of people who volunteer to help in the exhibit areas' and those who work for a few hours to whole days at a time in the many food stands, and the total of man hours is astounding. By way of representing all the many varied organizations which help to make the Solanco Fair successful year after year, Lancaster Farming asked two women who have served for seven years on the food committee there what is involved in the week long assignment to provide some of the food for those at tending the fair. In keeping with the at titude shared by those who have roles of responsibility and leadership in the Solanco Fair Association, these two ladies, Mrs. Allen Kreider, chairperson, and State Zip The Hoffman Community Building twill be the hot spot next week to get the Solance Fair Association’s well planned and delicious meals. Mrs. Paul Herr, committee member, both hesitated to talk about their own in volvement and preferred to give the credit to the many other volunteers who help out.
