Reporter YORK, Pa. - Dairy project members of 4-H in York County converged upon the York fairgrounds on August 16 for the annual roundup. Judge M. Thomas Shaeffer, of Huntsdale Stock Farms, Carlisle R 5, placed the approximately 100 entries in five breed divisions. Ginger Sechrist, Franklin County dairy person, selected fitting and showing dinners from each class. Young Jana Beth Fantom, Delta R 2, picked up her second grand and junior championship in a row with her junior Brown Swiss. At the recent Dallastown Fair, Jana Beth, in her first year or 4-H, walked away with top honors in the Brown Swiss breed. The reserve grand and junior champion Brown Swiss, a senior calf, belonged to Tommy Welsh, East Berlin Rl. A four-year-old Guernsey took the grand and senior champion rosettes for Brian Lehman, York 11. Brian has been showing “Harriet” for three years, since she became his as a junior calf. The 12-year-old is in his fourth year of 4-H and owns four Guernseys. Darryl Rohrbaugh, New Freedom Rl, exhibited the reserve grand and senior winning Guernsey, a two year-old cow that took junior division reserve champion earlier this year at the Farm Show. Junior Guernsey placings went to members of the Rutter family of York. Cindy Rutter showed a senior yearling to junior champion, while brother Todd Rutter took the reserve junior ribbon with a junior calf. Top honors in the Jersey division were captured by brothers Mike and Joey Welsh. East Berlin Rl. Mike Welsh exhibited the grand and junior champion, an intermediate calf. The reserve grand and junior champion, owned by Joey Welsh, previously won top district awards. Joey Welsh also exhibited a three-year-old Ayrshire to championship in that breed division. Sixteen-year-old Patty Greek, Delta R 2, took her first grand championship after three years of dairy showing when her two-year old swept the honors in the Holstein division. Judge Shaeffer commented after placing the young animal at the top of the classes that he “just liked that cow a lot.” Peter King, Delta R 2, finished with reserve senior and grand champion, also a two-year-old. Junior Holstein champion went to an intermediate calf exhibited by James Knight, Airville R 2, with David King, Delta R 2, capturing the reserve junior championship with a junior yearling.
