—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, June 25, 1977 102 Pesticide applicators need certification by October HARRISBURG - “Commercial applicators of restricted use pesticides will need “certification” by October, 1977, according to Donald Lott and Dave Thompson, regional pesticide inspectors from the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture. Under standards established in the Pennsylvania Pesticide Control Apt, anyone who is in the business _ of commercially applying restricted use pesticides, will have to become certified as a Commercial Applicator in order to continue buying and applying restricted use pesticides. This includes people whose business is direct application (exterminators, custom crop applicators a p d landscapers) and people whose business requires application of restricted use pesticides to protect and maintain a marketable product or service (golf courses, feed and flour mills, food processors, private schools, etc.) Restricted use pesticides will be those which, on a national basis, have the greatest effect on the environment and are generally highly toxic. The Federal government through the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is Picnic slated RED LION, Pa. - Red Lion Young Fanners will sponsor their annual picnic tomorrow June 26, at the Ellis Growl farm, Airville. J. - A baked chicken dinner will precede the Hunterdon County Dairy Princess Contest again this year, says Mrs. Marie Schwab, chairman for the event. A specialty at Stanton Grange, baked chicken was selected for the menu because of its popularity at this and other events in the past. The dinner is set for 7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 28. The new dairy princess will be crowned by Miss Debbie Case, Ringoes, the present reigning princess. A runner-up will also be named. Cash awards will be made to the winner and runner-up gifts provided for each of die girls entered. TRY A CLASSIFIED reviewing all currently manufactured pesticides and classifying each one according to it’s enviommental impact and relative toxicity. The safer compounds not being classified for restricted use will be classified as general use pesticides and will be available to the general public. Restricted use pesticides will only be available to certified applicators. An individual can be certified as a commercial applicator in numerous categories, depending on the kind of work in which he is engaged. For instance, an individual may be certified as a “Forest Pest Control Applicator” or a “Right-of- Way • Pest Control Applicator”, or those concerned about the protection of finished products from pests would be certified in the broad category entitled “Inudstrial, Institutional, Structural and Health Related Pest Control.” To become certified it will be necessary to prove competency through examinations. All commercial applicators are required to pass (1) a basic “Core” exam which covers general broad-based information on pesticide application and safety, and (2) one or more category exams, depending on the applicator’s specialized needs. These exams are proctored by the Department of Agriculture personnel. Test sessions are currently being held throughout the state. The local County Extension Office and the Regional Office of the Department of Agriculture can provide more detailed information regarding exam sessions, dates and locations. a series of training manuals have been developed by the Pennsylvania State University to help individuals prepare for these Ray Shaubs Auction Kirkwood, Pa Saturday, June 25 6:30 P.M.
