“Several shipments of
seed stock received by our
growers were suspected of
having been subjected to
chemical sprout inhibitor
treatment. The fields
planted with these seed
potatoes showed a very
unsatisfactory plant
population,” Shelhammer
explained.

are sometimes used on

maintain weight and prevent
sprouting.
“With the high cost of
production today,”
Shelhammer said,
“our growers cannot afford
to invest their money on seed
that has no chance of
producing a good crop.
Hopefully, this service will
help assure good yields from
potato plantings.”
Growers and dealers can
do much on their own to
determine the viability of
seed potatoes when recieved,
Shelhamer added. If the
tubers exhibit no signs of
sprouting, a sample should
be taken from the lot and
placed under conditions
which normally would en
courage sprouting. If the
tubers fail to sprout, the
Department of Agriculture
should be contacted.
